A Brief History of Pettigrew & Associates, P.A.
Richard Pettigrew, the founder of Pettigrew & Associates, graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1951 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After working on multiple projects throughout the country he returned to his wife’s hometown of Lovington, NM and accepted a position as Lea County Engineer. In 1965, Richard purchased Howard Schmeiding & Associates of Portales, NM. Five years later, in 1970, he also procured Richard P. Cheney & Associates of Clovis, NM for materials testing. The two companies were combined to create Richard R. Pettigrew & Associates. The company began as a five-person firm specializing in civil and municipal engineering, surveying, and boasting the first materials testing laboratory in the area. The firm’s first projects included highway repair in Portales, NM, and a water system project in Tatum, NM. Pettigrew & Associates also designed the first non-military instrument landing system in the state, located at the Lea County Airport in Hobbs, NM.
In 1982, Pettigrew & Associates moved the engineering offices to Hobbs, NM and the corporate headquarters soon followed. After graduating from New Mexico State University and obtaining her professional license, President and CEO, Debra Pettigrew Hicks, PE/LSI, purchased the firm from her father. She has continued to lead the firm to a successful, multi-faceted civil engineering enterprise. During 2014 alone, the firm has performed quality assurance, inspection, materials engineering, and testing, design engineering, construction engineering, and surveying on hundreds of projects valued at over $5.5 billion. The firm has also received several awards over the years recognizing engineering excellence. Recent projects include Broadmoor Elementary, Murray Elementary, the Health, Wellness, and Learning Center, the Boys and Girls Club, the Energyplex Industrial Park with over 10,000 acres, several Xcel Energy expansion projects, and Eddy County FEMA Response.
